Today was an exciting day for Lisieux Community. We hosted women for the first time at the new drop-in center! Three women came and ate a hot meal, obtained clothing, showers, and left with enough toiletries and snacks to last them a couple of days. One of our women showed up with her shoulders down, drawn in on herself. She had on dirty clothes and tennis shoes that were soaking wet due to walking through the melted snow. We had given her the tennis shoes a few weeks back when she was wearing sandals with no socks in the cold. After she ate a nice meal, we offered her a shower and set her up with jeans, undergarments, a shirt, sweater, and toiletries. When she emerged from the bathroom, her whole demeanor had transformed. She was no longer cowering. She had a huge smile on her face, her arms were outstretched—she was almost twirling! She couldn’t say thank you enough.
Here’s the thing—when she showed up today, despite her need for clean clothing and a shower, despite the fact that she had slipped on a patch of ice that morning and hurt her back, despite her grief at a close friend’s passing, she walked into the drop-in center carrying a rose for us. We are constantly in awe of the hearts of the women we serve. They have some of the kindest souls you’d ever hope to meet. Thank you all for making dreams become reality, for enabling us to do this important work and love on these women. We are honored and we look forward to many more days like today.
